About the Position
The Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs Secretariat (APC) is seeking a Senior First Nations Public Safety & Policing Advisor to provide strategic, legal, and policy advice to Chiefs and First Nation leadership on policing, public safety, and justice matters affecting Atlantic First Nations communities.
This role promotes culturally grounded approaches to community safety while supporting both immediate priorities and long-term policing initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior First Nations Public Safety & Policing Advisor will:
Provide legal, policy, and strategic advice to Chiefs and First Nation leadership on policing, public safety, and justice matters
Support the ongoing advocacy, discussions, and strategies of an Atlantic Chiefs Committee and a Public Safety & Policing Committee
Coordinate committee meetings and support required follow-up actions
Assist First Nation leadership during negotiations and policy discussions with federal and provincial governments
Coordinate First Nations input into public safety and policing legislation, policies, and reform initiatives
Support the development of long-term First Nations policing models and community safety initiatives
Advise and support the enforcement of First Nations laws, by-laws, and community safety measures
Prepare communications, briefing materials, policy and issue analyses, recommendations, and other supporting documents
Monitor emerging issues and developments affecting First Nations public safety and policing
Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
A degree in Law, Criminology, Public Administration, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience
Long-term experience working with First Nations governments, communities, or policing environments
Strong analytical and policy-development skills
Excellent relationship-building abilities
Knowledge of First Nations governance, policing, by-laws, and community safety frameworks
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and virtual meeting platforms
Additional Requirements
The successful candidate must:
Hold a valid driver's licence
Be willing and able to travel throughout Atlantic Canada
Obtain security clearance if required
