Chaleur Regional Hospital Celebrates Opening of New Wing, Bringing Improved Patient Care to the Region

A major milestone for health care in northeastern New Brunswick! Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst officially celebrated the inauguration of its new wing on October 13, 2026, marking an important step forward in improving health care facilities for patients, families and medical professionals throughout the region.

The expansion, funded through a significant investment by the Government of New Brunswick, introduces modernized patient rooms, improved accessibility and upgraded clinical spaces designed to better meet the needs of the communities the hospital serves.

For Pabineau First Nation members and neighbouring communities who rely on Chaleur Regional Hospital for medical services, these improvements are a welcome development in regional health care.

More Comfortable and Accessible Patient Rooms

One of the most significant improvements is the introduction of 86 single and semi-private patient rooms, replacing the hospital's previous four-bed accommodations.

Each new room includes a private bathroom, offering patients greater comfort, dignity and privacy during their hospital stay.

The rooms have also been designed with accessibility in mind, providing more space for individuals with reduced mobility and allowing medical professionals to safely use modern health care equipment.

These changes are expected to improve the patient experience while supporting infection prevention and control.

Expanded and Modernized Health Care Services

The new wing will provide updated facilities for several important medical services, including:

  • Oncology and cancer care

  • Renal health and kidney care

  • Surgical services

  • Palliative care

  • Acute and inpatient care

  • Rehabilitation services

  • Outpatient clinics

The expansion also introduces dedicated rooms for certain minor medical procedures, helping improve patient flow and allowing operating rooms to be used more efficiently.

Beyond clinical care, the hospital will benefit from improved reception areas, admissions facilities, administrative workspaces and a modernized cafeteria.

A Gradual Transition to the New Facilities

Although the new wing has officially opened, services will transition into their new spaces gradually throughout the fall and winter of 2026.

Since September 22, the hospital's new main entrance, reception, admissions and blood collection services have already been welcoming patients and visitors.

Additional services, including oncology, renal health, outpatient clinics and inpatient units, will relocate in phases to ensure patient safety and continuity of care.

Further improvements are also planned, including renovations to existing hospital spaces and an expansion of the Mother/Child unit.

Supporting Healthier Communities Across the Chaleur Region

Access to comfortable, modern and accessible health care facilities is an important part of supporting the well-being of individuals and families.

The expansion of Chaleur Regional Hospital represents years of planning, collaboration and investment in the future of regional health care.

Pabineau First Nation welcomes this important development for the Bathurst area and the surrounding communities who depend on the hospital's services.
