A Moment of Pride: Grand Council Mi’kmaq Flag Raised at Terry Fox Elementary School

On May 14th, 2025, Pabineau First Nation was honored to hold a flag ceremony at Terry Fox Elementary School, marking the permanent raising of the Grand Council Mi’kmaq Flag. This significant event serves as a reminder of our rich Mi'kmaq heritage and the importance of honoring our culture within educational spaces.

The ceremony was a powerful moment for our community, as the Grand Council Mi’kmaq Flag was proudly hoisted to symbolize the ongoing strength, resilience, and cultural identity of the Mi'kmaq people. This flag, now permanently displayed at Terry Fox Elementary, will stand as a constant symbol of respect and recognition for our culture, ensuring that future generations of students learn about the Mi'kmaq legacy and our contributions to the broader community.

Wela'leg to All Who Made This Possible

A heartfelt Wela’leg (thank you) goes out to all those who made this historic moment a reality. This achievement is a collective effort, and it’s thanks to the dedication of community leaders, educators, and families who worked together to make this ceremony and permanent installation possible. Your commitment to preserving and promoting our culture within educational institutions is truly appreciated.

A Step Toward Reconciliation and Respect

Raising the Grand Council Mi’kmaq Flag is not just about symbolism—it is an important step toward reconciliation, respect, and awareness of Indigenous culture in educational environments. It’s a reminder that the history, traditions, and values of the Mi'kmaq people are an integral part of this land, and we are committed to ensuring that future generations grow up with a deeper understanding of this connection.

A New Legacy for Terry Fox Elementary

With this flag raised proudly in front of Terry Fox Elementary, we’re excited to see how this act of cultural recognition will inspire students and educators alike. This small but meaningful gesture reinforces the values of inclusion, respect, and learning that Pabineau First Nation holds dear.

Let this flag be a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and the strength of our community.
