Reflecting on a Heartfelt Gathering: The Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada Event

On Sunday, May 25, Pabineau First Nation hosted a truly special and meaningful event that brought our community together. The gathering celebrated the interactive and educational experience of the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada, offering a deeper connection to the land, history, and culture of our people.

This event was a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the strength that comes when we gather to learn, share, and celebrate our heritage. The event was held at Pabineau First Nation, and the energy in the air was electric as members of the community and special guests came together to experience the 36x26 foot floor map showcasing Indigenous territories, treaties, and languages across Canada.

Honoring Our Guests and Community

We were honored to have several special guests who shared their insights and support for our community:

  • Dr. Jennifer Russell, Executive Director of the UNB Institute of Population Health and President of the New Brunswick College of Family Physicians, graced us with her presence and powerful words on the importance of preserving and promoting Indigenous health and wellness.

  • Martha O'Sullivan, Deputy Minister at the Government of New Brunswick, also joined us, bringing her wealth of knowledge and commitment to fostering stronger relationships between Indigenous communities and government.

Our Council Members were present to represent the leadership of Pabineau First Nation, ensuring that the community's voice was heard throughout the event.

A Beautiful Connection Through Music and Stories

One of the most heartfelt moments of the day came from the drum circle, where the sounds of the drums brought a sense of unity and connection to our shared history. The rhythmic beats echoed through the space, grounding us in the spirit of our ancestors and the deep connection to the land we’ve held for generations.

The community members also shared powerful stories, each offering their personal connections to the land and their reflections on the significance of this event. These stories helped us all understand the importance of preserving our culture, language, and connection to the land for future generations.

An Interactive Experience for All

The Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada provided an immersive experience for all attendees. With its interactive floor map, participants could walk across Canada and learn about Indigenous territories and historical treaties, discovering the rich cultural heritage of our people. This was an opportunity for everyone—young and old—to engage with the land and its history in a hands-on, visual way that will leave a lasting impact on all who attended.

Looking Forward to the Future

This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together to share knowledge, celebrate our roots, and strengthen our community. It’s these gatherings that help us keep our traditions alive, ensuring that our young people grow up with a deep understanding of their heritage and the responsibilities they hold in preserving it.

As we look toward the future, Pabineau First Nation remains committed to empowering our community members through education, collaboration, and cultural stewardship. Events like this one allow us to honor our past while forging a brighter path forward.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Special thanks to Dr. Jennifer Russell, Martha O'Sullivan, our Council Members, and all the community members who shared their stories and participated in the celebration. Together, we continue to create a strong and vibrant future for Pabineau First Nation.

Special Thanks

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, the University of New Brunswick Institute of Population Health, and more, for their incredible support in making this event a reality. Your commitment to fostering cultural understanding, supporting Indigenous communities, and advancing education has made a lasting impact on our community and beyond.
