Celebrating Gordon Sparks' Solo Exhibition: Mask Medicine

Celebrating Gordon Sparks' Solo Exhibition: Mask Medicine

Pabineau First Nation is proud to celebrate Gordon Sparks, one of our own talented community members, who recently opened his solo exhibition, 'Mask Medicine'. The exhibition opened with a powerful ceremony led by Elder Cyril Polchies (Wape'k Paqtism), marking the start of what promises to be a moving showcase of Mi'kmaq culture and artistic expression.

The opening reception, held at the Craft Ontario Gallery, was attended by many, creating a meaningful connection between Gordon, Cyril, and the local community. We are incredibly grateful to have had Gordon and Cyril travel from Rough Waters to participate in this special event, and we thank all who came to share in the celebration. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the New Brunswick Arts Board for their support of this exhibition.

Honoring the Tradition of Mi'kmaq Carving

As part of the Mi'kmaq carving tradition, Gordon Sparks has been recognized for his dedication to preserving and sharing the deep cultural significance of mask carving within our community. The 'Mask Medicine' exhibition is a testament to his journey as a Mi'kmaq wooden mask carver and tattoo artist, beautifully bridging the past and present.

We are proud to see Gordon Sparks continue to showcase his artistry to the world and look forward to the future of Mi'kmaq art through his work.
