Scholarship Opportunity: Brunswick Smelter Bursaries for 2026/2027

Glencore Smelter Bursary

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this policy is to provide information and guidelines regarding the terms and conditions relating to the Glencore Brunswick Smelter Bursary. Please read requirements carefully.

 

SCOPE

Bursaries will be awarded each year for a total of five years which began in 2023. The value will be CAD$1,000 for students from each of the communities of Ugpi'ganjig/Eel River Bar and Oinpegitjoig/Pabineau First Nations.

 

Bursaries will be awarded for a single academic year. Bursary recipients will be allowed to re-apply in future years for a bursary and will be eligible to receive assistance for up to four years or to the completion of a first diploma or first undergraduate degree.

 

ELIGIBILITY

The bursary will be open to students pursuing studies in science, environment, engineering, or trades and is open to students regardless of their year of study. 

 

Students applying must:

  • Be a band member of Ugpi'ganjig/Eel River Bar First Nations, Oinpegitjoig/Pabineau First Nation

  • Entering or enrolled in a full-time post-secondary education program at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution in the areas of science, environment, engineering, or trades. Programs of study may be academic, vocational, technical, or technological.

  • Able to demonstrate one or more of community involvement, academic excellence, leadership qualities, and career objectives which will make a positive contribution in society.

  • Application must be received by the bursary deadline.

  • Applications from direct family members of MTI employees will not be eligible.

 

POLICY AND PROCEDURE

Application Procedure

Applicants are required to submit the following documents (duplicate essays will not be accepted):

  • Complete general application form on Glencore careers site.

  • An essay (maximum 2 double-spaced pages) detailing the following :

    • Academic goals, career aims and objectives.

    • Special achievements (community involvement and/or volunteering, academic excellence, and leadership qualities).

    • Non-academic interests and activities.

 Most recent year's (1) transcripts* of high school/CEGEP/college/university records (ALL terms/semesters) ** Transcript from the Ministry of Education of Quebec will not be accepted as it does not contain the number of credits per course.

* Please note that while official transcripts (printed on security paper and bearing the signature of the Registrar and/or the school seal) are not required for the application process, official transcripts may be requested as back-up prior to the awarding of any bursary.

** Ensure that the maximum Grade Point Average awarded by your educational institution and the numerical value of each letter grade are clearly stated on the transcript. CEGEP students (Quebec Only), please include your most recent "R" value.

All applications can be submitted in full by sending all requested documents to brunswicksmelterbursary@glencore.ca.  No hard copy documents are required.

 Closing date for applications is August 31, 2026. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

Bursary Recipient Selection

Each year, the Brunswick Smelter Decommissioning Team will assemble a Bursary Selection Committee comprised of three First Nations community members and two Brunswick Smelter members.

The Committee will assess all submissions under the terms of the approved evaluation criteria.

The Successful candidate will be advised of their award by approximately October 31, 2026.

 

Recipients will receive their bursaries in one payment by November 30, 2026, after providing confirmation from the institution of the student's enrolment and the nature of the course they are taking.
