As a learner you should:

• be respectful to others;
• at all times, act in a way that will reflect well on you and your class;
• respect your teacher's requests as he directs the class;
• respect what the teacher and other learners say even though you may not always agree with their opinions;
• respect the property of the classroom, the teacher, and other learners;
• take care of your personal property; and
• follow the rules of conduct and attendance, and respect rules that apply to the operation of your program.

Any behavior that interferes with learning in the classroom is unacceptable. Unacceptable behavior includes:

• violence, harm or threat of harm to others or their property;
• endangering the health and safety of others;
• acting or speaking in a disruptive, disorderly, indecent or offensive manner or in a way that causes fear;
• damaging property n the classroom or removing property from the classroom without permission;
• any kind of illegal activity;
• use or possession of alcoholic beverages or non-medical drugs; and
• smoking in the classroom.

As a leaner you are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to improve your education and skills by taking an active part in your education, attending class regularly and taking responsibility for what you need to learn.

As a learner, it is your responsibility to:

• provide the teacher with information needed to complete the Learner Registry;
• sign the Learner Contract;
• decide if you will sign a Consent to Release of Information from so your personal information can be released (your teacher will explain how the information will be used);
• have your teacher return the Letter of Acceptance to the government department or sponsoring agency that referred you to the Program;
• review the Learner Guidelines with your teacher;
• decide, with your teacher, how many hours each week you will attend class (in some cases, your funding agency will decide how many hours you must attend);
• apply yourself to your studies and do everything you can to achieve your goals;
• listen carefully to your teacher and take part in class discussions and group projects;
• follow the teacher’s directions and ask questions;
• complete assignments and pass them in on time;
• never cheat or plagiarize when doing assignment or writing tests. This means you cannot present the ideas or written work of others as your own. You cannot use others’ ideas or copy information directly from a book or other written material without saying who developed the ideas or information; and
• ask about and take advantage of any support services and programs available to you.

If, over a reasonable period of time (the length of time will be agreed upon by the teacher, your sponsoring agency, if applicable, and you), you have been unable to make progress in your work, your teacher may discuss the situation with you and any sponsors and you may be asked to leave the program.

When you register, you will have a chance to discuss the number of hours per week you will attend class with your teacher. In some cases, your funding agency will tell you how many hours you must attend. We encourage you to attend class regularly. You should keep in mind that:

• if you need to change the number of hours you plan to attend per week, you must speak to your teacher;
• if you know you are likely to miss some classes, you should let your teacher know;
• too many absences may lead to poor performance. You may be taking a seat away from another learner who is able to attend regularly;
• if you have three unjustified absences, your teacher will discuss the situation with you and with sponsors and you may be asked to leave the program;
• if you are absent 5 days in a row without contacting your teacher, your teacher will assume you have voluntarily left the program. Your place may be given to another learner; and
• occasionally, it is necessary to cancel classes because of bad weather or other emergencies. Class cancellations often follow cancellations in the public school system. Your teacher will tell you about the cancellation policy for your class.
