Student Financial Assistance for full time post-secondary students in New Brunswick

The Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour's (PETL) Student Financial Services (SFS) Branch, administers both federal and provincial student financial assistance programs in New Brunswick.

The following programs are currently available:

Canada Student Loan & New Brunswick
Student Loan
The Government of Canada provides 60% of the students assessed need in the form of Canada Student Loan funding, up to a maximum of $200 per week of study and the Government of NB provides 40% of the student's assessed need in the form of NB student loan funding, up to $140 per week of study.

Canada Student Grant for Persons from
Low-Income Families
Students who qualify for a Canada student loan and meet the grant eligibility requirements will receive $250 per month of study.  this grant is available for all years of a university undergraduate, college, or trade school program that is at least two years (60 weeks) in duration.

Canada Student Grant for Persons with Dependants Students who qualify for a Canada student loan and meet the grant eligibility requirements can receive $200 per month of study, per child under 12 years of age (at the beginning of the academic year).

Canada Student Grant for Persons from
Middle-Income Families
Students who qualify for a Canada student loan and meet the grant eligibility requirements will receive $100 per month of study.  This grant is available for all years of a university undergraduate, college or trade school program that is a least two years (60 weeks) in duration.

Canada Student Grant for Persons with
Permanent Disabilities
Under this grant, students with permanent disabilities will receive $2,000 per academic year to help cover the costs of accommodation, tuition, and books.

New Brunswick Bursary The maximum amount available to students is $90 per week of study.  To be eligible, the students assessed need must be greater than the maximum student loans/grants available.

Canada Student Grant for Services & Equipment for
Persons with Permanent Disabilites
Under this grant, students with permanent disabilities who have exceptional education-related costs such as tutors, note-takers, interpreter, braillers or technical aids receive up to $8,000 per academic year.

Repayment Assistance Plan This plan is designed to assist student loan borrowers who experience difficulties in meeting their loan repayment obligations.  Under the plan, the amount a borrower pays is based on how much the individual earns, how much they owe on their student loans, and on their family size.

Debt Reduction for Timely Completion Benefit This benefit is designed to help post-secondary graduates by addressing accumulated student loan debit and encouraging the successful completion of studies in a timely manner.  Students who complete an undergraduate degree, certificate or diploma at: (a) a private chartered, not-for-profit, degree-granting institution located in NB, or (b) any publicly funded post-secondary educational institution; within the established timeline of the program, and who have total combined Canada and NB government student loans associated with that credential exceeding $26,000, will have 100% threshold forgiven.  Graduates must apply to receive the Timely Completion Benefit within seven months of their graduation date.
